Live Data Links
ExtraView was designed to fit in well with other applications. The ExtraView API allows searches, creation, modification, and mass operations on records as well as some administrative functions. ExtraView also provides other methods for passing information to other applications from within the browser interface. The ExtraView administrator can add an 'external link' button to any field on an 'Add' or 'Edit' layout in ExtraView. An external link button is a live link in the form of a small button -- usually to the right of a field as it appears on an ExtraView add or edit screen. When pressed, it executes a request that is populated with field values from the current record on the screen. The buttons are often used to invoke custom searches, pass record data to other applications, run cgi scripts, or trigger actions in other software applications-- without disrupting the current screen.

In the example add screen above, there are two (circled) external link buttons. The UPS link, on the right in this example, passes the indicated tracking number to the United Parcel Service package tracking Web site. This enables the customer support representative to inform the customer of the status of delivery of his or her update.

Creation of external link buttons is set through the data dictionary definition in the ExtraView administration area. This requires no programming and typically takes only moments to set up.
